What is a CNR number?
CNR stands for Case Number Record. It is a unique 16-character alphanumeric number that the eCourts system gives a case when it is registered. Unlike the case number, which is local to one court, the CNR identifies the case anywhere on eCourts and stays the same for its whole life.
A CNR such as MHAU010012342023 breaks down like this:
- MH: the State code (here, Maharashtra).
- AU: the district code.
- 01: the court establishment within the district.
- 001234: the case's serial number in that establishment.
- 2023: the year the case was registered.
Where to find your CNR number
- On orders and judgments: district court orders usually print the CNR at the top or bottom of the first page.
- On the eCourts case status page: search by case number, party name, advocate name or FIR number, then open the case to see its CNR.
- From your advocate or the court's filing counter.

What the case status page shows
- Case type, filing and registration numbers, and the CNR.
- First hearing date, next hearing date and the case stage.
- Court number and judge.
- Petitioner, respondent and their advocates.
- Acts and sections, and the FIR details in criminal cases.
- The history of hearings, interim orders and the final order or judgment.
If the CNR is not found
Check case status on the eCourts Services app
The official eCourts Services app (Android and iPhone) has the same CNR search. Enter the CNR, open the case and save it to My Cases so you can open it again without typing the number.
High Courts and the Supreme Court
High Courts on the eCourts system issue CNRs too, and you can search them on hcservices.ecourts.gov.in or in the eCourts app. Some High Courts also run their own case status pages. The Supreme Court is separate: search it on its own website by diary number, case number or party name.
Track every case automatically with Xegality
Checking eCourts works for one case. With twenty matters it becomes a morning chore. In Xegality Court Tracking, you enter the CNR once and link it to the case:
- The live court record: parties, stage, court, judge and the next hearing date, refreshed whenever you open it.
- The hearing history and every order in one place, with an AI summary of what each order decided and what happens next.
- Notifications when a new order is uploaded or the next hearing date changes, and a reminder the day before the hearing.
- The Daily Cause List by state and district, to spot your matters early.
- The same court status for your client in their free client dashboard.
It sits inside your advocate diary, next to the case's documents, drafts and invoices, so the hearing date and the work for it are on one page.
